Valerie’s Voice: Winter 2019

As the New Year unfolds, we have made great strides, but there is more work left to be done! I look forward to working together with my colleagues in the legislature as we aspire to make 2019 a year of progress and prosperity.

In honor of Babs Casbar Siperstein – A tenacious fighter for equality.

2018-2019 Legislation Signed into Law

LGBT Curriculum Legislation Signed into Law

I am proud to be the prime sponsor of legislation that would ensure school curriculums adopt inclusive instructional materials that portray the cultural and economic diversity of society including the contributions of persons with disabilities and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

Fair, accurate, inclusive and respectful representation is critical to all students. It is my hope that with this legislation signed into law, we can foster new generations of students that understand the importance of tolerance and equality.

Keeping Our Communities Safe

Thank you Governor Murphy for signing the Non-Profit Security Grant Program Expansion into law

Recently, we have seen a disturbing rise in incidents of hate and bigotry based on race, religion and ethnicity. In many instances, targets include places of worship and non-profit organizations that serve their communities..

A3906, the Non-Profit Security Grant program would permit eligible non-profit organizations to acquire target hardening equipment in addition to hiring permanent or temporary security personnel. The passage of this bill will help places of worship and other non-profit service organizations to better protect themselves, allowing them to continue serving our communities without fear.

This bill was signed into law by Governor Murphy in January alongside A4597, legislation that makes a supplemental appropriation of $11,300,000 from the General Fund to the Department of Education to increase per pupil funding for nonpublic security aid from $75 to $150. These new laws will provide critical funding so that every New Jerseyan can live without fear or intimidation.

Standing with Commissioner of Education Lamont Repollet, State Police Col. Patrick Callahan and Homeland Security Dir. Jared Maples to discuss safety in our schools, houses of worship and non-profit organizations.

Nurture NJ: Reducing Maternal Mortality in the Garden State

New Jersey needs to do better by our expectant mothers. I am grateful that Governor Murphy signed my legislation (A2366) into law calling on the Department of Health to develop a report card of hospital maternity care. This report card can give key insight to expectant mothers in New Jersey about the quality of hospitals’ maternity care.

Palisades Interstate Park Commission

Together with my colleagues from the 37th Legislative District, we passed legislation allowing the Palisades Interstate Park Commission eligible for open space and historic preservation funding. The Palisades Interstate Park Commission works to ensure the preservation of natural, historic, and cultural resources – their efforts are critical to the preservation of the Palisades.
