Port Authority Has Too Much Power

To the Editor:

While it shameful that the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey sold the World Trade Center naming rights for $10, it is not surprising. For years, the agency has been operating in the shadows and has rejected calls for greater transparency and accountability. Governor Christie enabled this behavior when he vetoed bi-state, bipartisan legislation I sponsored to bring much needed reform and oversight to the PANYNJ. As a result, the mismanagement continues, as highlighted by a recent federal report.

We are reminded that Bergen County commuters had almost no voice in the hastily executed, burdensome toll hike or any other questionable move. Yet the agency still has unchecked power. How much more evidence of abuse does the governor need before he finally joins our effort to clean up the PANYNJ and hold it accountable?
